So, myself and the fangirls were all a-twitter (ha!) today about the 4 new pics that were posted of David Tennant as Peter Vincent (Fright Night). Most of us agree that the lace-up leather pants are totally smokin' hot! And we appreciate that they didn't airbrush out the appendectomy scar, which we are hoping means that it will be visible for a good portion of the film!

As much as I would love for DT to wear this, or even less, for the duration of the film, I have strong suspicion that will not be the case. My feeling is that we will get one decently sized scene of Peter Vincent on stage, performing his magic act in this costume, and then we will see him change off stage. He will remove the wig, beard and mustache, and the next thing we see will be Peter Vincent, geek! (Best of both worlds. Make the entire fangirl population happy. Maybe even add in some brainy specs.) I just don't see him running around as the "vampire-hunter" in this get up. And I see the comedic aspects of making his stage persona so far out from the real, more mundane, ordinary Peter Vincent.

Unfortunately, we have more than a year to wait and further speculate as things get leaked. (This was a controlled leak, surely. Just to generate some early buzz, and maybe to test the waters a bit?) I, for one, am already desperate to see David in this film. I don't know how I will make it until October 2011. Thank goodness for Single Father and Decoy Bride! Maybe there will be a few other projects in the mean time.

Surely, this will majorly increase his fan base. He should be a huge star here in the US. Hope Dreamworks promotes and plays this right.

David Tennant at the Emmys

Poor lad walked the red carpet alone tonight at the 2010 Emmy Awards. He looked a bit lost at times, and you just know that no one, or not many people, knew who he was. At one point, he wandered into camera shot behind Piers Morgan who was about to be interviewed. It looked like he was being led by a dark haired woman; a staffer of some sort, or maybe one of his handlers, but they were directed back the other way. I'm quite sure each and every fangirl that saw that thought much the same thing-oh, poor baby! I'm coming to hold your hand! (But as sorry as I felt that he was by himself, I have to say that I am very grateful that the Child was not with him. My gag reflex has been a bit sensitive of late.)

I'm kind of digging the suit he was wearing. I really like the black-on-black look on him. The coat was a longer style and was paired with skinny trousers. My only complaint is that it looked like it needed some tailoring- the pants were a bit too long, as were the sleeves. I don't know how much advance notice he had that he was attending, it may have been last minute, which would explain much. He did look really good tonight though; rested, healthy, slightly tanned. Being in the US is clearly benefiting him physically, or it may just be enjoyment of the work. But to be on the safe side, I vote that he move here, after all, why take any chances? (And just to be facetious-maybe it's because of the separation from the hangers-on, hmmm?)

In the UK he is such a superstar. I wonder if he is enjoying the anonymity he is experiencing here, or if he is missing the limelight a bit. Certainly, his red carpet experience tonight was vastly different from what he has become accustomed to over the past few years. Let's hope that changes soon. Decoy Bride has been filmed, and Fright Night is in the works. Both films will be in theatres in 2011. The man so deserves to be as well known here as he is in the UK.

End of Time

I tortured myself tonight by watching the Doctor Who Confidential "Allons-y", for the End of Time Part 2. That has become my litmus test~once I can make it through the Confidential without crying, I can then re-watch the actual episodes. I have tried about a half-dozen times so far, and no dice. This:

Wednesday night

It's been reported that this is one of the costumes David is wearing in The Decoy Bride. Here's hoping that his character, James, fell into the water or got caught in a storm or something, and this is not the way he normally dresses. Although I have to admit, that I wondered for a second if this shirt came out of David's own closet. Ha!

Outfit aside, he is looking remarkably well here. And he looked great during the tv interview. He hasn't looked his best in some of his recent pictures (especially the Legally Blonde photos), looking thinner and a bit more haggard. I think that flash photography is not particularily flattering to him. He looks better in more natural or diffused lighting.

Rumor has it that one scene involves David wearing only boxer shorts. That will be worth the price of admission alone! Hey, we got gypped out of a half clothed Doctor, and had to suffer through such a scene with Matt Smith. It's only fair that the DT fangirls get their due. *laughs*

Doctor Who:The Movie?

Lots of rumors circulating on Twitter this week regarding David Tennant and/or Doctor Who. There will be a surprise guest star, a previous Doctor?, in the Christmas Special Doctor Who. Speculation is that it could be Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, or the gorgeous TimeGod we know and love. (guess who!) The reason given for it not being one of the others is that the rest are either deceased (yeah, um, I guess we can accept that excuse), or they have distanced themselves from the show or are not on good terms. Okay, but don't Colin Baker and Peter Davison appear at conventions all the time? How is that distancing yourself? I guess I can't see Chris Eccleston wanting to do it, but even Tom Baker has given recent interviews. So there are other possibilities. I suppose its possible that David would make a guest appearance. They will begin shooting the Christmas special sometime in July, so he might be able to break away for a day or two from movie filming or go in between films, I suppose. But, as much as I miss seeing him as the Doctor, I really hope this rumor is false. Getting him back, however brief, will make Matt Smith that much harder for me to stomach.

Just saw this one this afternoon: Russell T. Davies moved to the US so that he could remake Doctor Who as a movie for American audiences. *cue sarcasm* And the best part? Johnny Depp will play the Doctor! This just seems wrong on so many levels. First, I don't believe that that was RTD's motivation for moving to the US, and I certainly don't think that the new Torchwood, or a movie DW, is in any way a snub at the UK or British actors, as was implied/commented. Second, I like Johnny Depp. I like Doctor Who. Do I think the two should go together? No. No. Really, no. If there were to be such a thing, would they discount/discard the current storyline? Would RTD really do that to a show he absolutely loves? Doubtful. What I would love to see? A big screen version of a Tenth Doctor adventure (starring David Tennant, of course!).

One minor rant on a related note: why do they keep remaking British television shows? The originals are great, funny-brilliant, really-with some terrific actors. Torchwood has somewhat escaped that fate (it's not Torchwood without John Barrowman), but US versions of Being Human &Top Gear are coming out. Life on Mars was on a few years back-what a disaster that was. In answer to the poster on the page with the movie rumor: not all of us want a new version. Some of us like the shows the way they are. If we could get them on the air here, we would watch them. But our television networks are in the business to make money. Period.

Well, that was all rather scattered and rambling. Sorry about that~tough day.

The Pandorica Opens!

This is a red letter day! Today is the day that I can finally say, "I really enjoyed this episode of Doctor Who." And it only took, what, 12 episodes to get there? Sure, there were some big WTH is going on moments, but there were some really good ones (loved the spidery cyberman head) as well. I am looking forward to next week. I even didn't hate River Song quite as much, and am rather intrigued with some of the theories floating around as to her identity. (And if one particular theory comes true, then Steven Moffat is an absolute genius! Doesn't negate the rest of the crap we've been given though.)

Unfortunately, I still don't feel Matt Smith as the Doctor. I just don't think he has the acting chops to pull off some of the emotional scenes in this episode, or any of them really. He just hasn't become the character for me, the way other actors have in the role.

And now that I mention that, how great would David have been in this episode? I could so see him standing at Stonehenge, raging at all of the aliens. He would have been brilliant!

New Nu Who

I simply must have the obligitory David Tennant Tenth Doctor photo to start this, even though his time is done, just because I like it!

So, we are midway through Series 5 of Doctor Who. I still remain quite disappointed by nu nu who, but I may have to revise my opinion of WHY I am disappointed. First, it was because David Tennant was gone, and Matt Smith simply fell short in the acting department. I hate to pick on poor Matt. He is probably a perfectly fine actor, in something else.

After the second episode, I started to think that maybe the fault lay with the writing. What happened to Steven Moffatt? This was the man that gave us Blink and the Girl in the Fireplace. He is brilliant. And yet, the episodes were just average. Mediocre. Meh. Completely substandard, in my opinion. Of course, I seemed to be in the minority with this opinion. The vast majority was singing the praises of the Moff and new nu who, calling it brilliant, exciting, omg, the best ever! Week after week, I watched, and waited for this revelation. Unfortunately, it has not happened.

I want to be very clear on this: I WANT to love this show! I am a long time Doctor Who fan, but I freely admit that I prefer new who to classic who. I loved the direction that RTD took the show. And, of course, David Tennant is my all time favorite Doctor. Regardless, David left, and I was hoping to at least enjoy the series as I did when Chris Eccleston was the Doctor. Sadly, that is not the case.

This weeks episode, Amy's Choice got mixed reviews. Funnily enough, some of the people that have been singing praises were not as pleased this week, while I actually liked it a bit more. I was beginning to despise Amy after the past few episodes, even though I liked her at first. I thought her character was better this week. And Matt Smith didn't bother me as much. But I also find myself revising my opinion about why the series is falling so flat for me.

I think I have been looking at this the wrong way. RTD always maintained that when he wrote an episode of Doctor Who, he didn't think about the actor playing the Doctor. The Doctor was written the same way, regardless. Personally, I think that was BS. Some of those episodes would never have been written with Eccleston in the role. Many of the same writers are working on S5 that wrote episodes for Tennant's Doctor, who was an extremely capable actor. If they ARE writing the episodes the same way as before, then it really is Matt Smith and crew just falling short. If there was a different actor in the role, it might be better. (Conversely, if the writers were writing for an actor other than DT, Matt Smith might just be fabulous.) *sigh* It's convoluted.

Of course, speculating why it is falling flat doesn't really change anything. I will continue to watch each week, and hope this will be the breakthrough week for me. Maybe there will be a miracle.

Relieved

Watched the series 5 premiere of Doctor Who tonight. I am grateful to the lovely person that uploaded it to You Tube. It is ridiculous that there is a 2 week delay between the UK and US air dates. Frankly, this premiere has been so hyped on the web for months, there is no way that I could have waited that long and remained on Twitter.

In any event, I am relieved. I don't hate Matt Smith, and I don't hate Doctor Who. I was so afraid that it would be unwatchable, given how much I adore David Tennant's portrayal of the Doctor. I wanted to at least be able to enjoy it as I had with Christopher Eccleston in the role. I did enjoy it and will look forward to more episodes, just as I did before DT.

My relief is two-fold. Of course I wanted to like the show, in general. But I don't love it, and thus will never have to go through the emotional rollercoaster that I experienced with Tennant's series. His last episodes and regeneration were like an actual death for me, with all of the anguish of losing a real person. I have never experienced such a reaction to an actor, much less a fictional character, the way I have with David Tennant. It is something that I never want to go through ever again. I can simply say that I like Doctor Who, and that I am looking forward to the remainder of the series. *whew!*

Now that the new series is underway, I am hoping that all of the angst, the mourning, the uncertainty, will fade away. David will always be MY Doctor, but I can also enjoy whatever he will present in the future, hopefully without the same level of obsession.

No spoilers about the first episode, at least not until it has aired in the US. Overall, it was good. Not great, but good, and that is good enough for me.

The Writer's Tale

I finished reading The Writer's Tale, The Final Chapter earlier this week. Close to 700 pages of correspondence (emails and texts) between Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies and Benjamin Cook. Also included are portions of scripts and articles. It provides an insiders view of the popular series, that any Doctor Who fan will enjoy.

Russell T. Davies is a supremely talented writer. He is clever, funny, witty, angsty, and melodramatic-sometimes all at the same time. It was fascinating to see his thoughts communicated, and how they translated to a finished script. We get to see a side of familiar cast members, David Tennant, Julie Gardner, Steven Moffatt, and more that we would normally never see. All in all, this was a brilliant piece of work-a true genius idea.

Tennant Tuesday

Watched "Midnight" last night. I forgot how creepy it was. David was particularly good in that episode, and watching the Doctor lose control of the situation was terrible! One of my favorites, I think.

DT obsession continues

What a way to start the morning...or afternoon or evening, for that matter! The eyes, the hair, the long coat-it's just perfect.

Anyway, not sure how this obsession began. I have been a Doctor Who fan for quite some time, and was very excited when the new series started. Christopher Eccleston was good as the 9th Doctor. But then, a certain skinny, scottish bloke appeared on screen, and it was the beginning of the end for me! His geeky good looks and boyish enthusiasm completely charmed me. But I still had it under control until around the 4th series. I just knew something was going to happen, I could just feel it. I kept saying to my husband, this is bad....he is going to regenerate and I am going to be devastated, I don't want to watch. But, of course, I did. Then, Doctor Who disappeared off our tv screen, and I didn't hear any news for quite some time. Out of sight, out of mind, I guess.

Then I heard the news that I had been fearing for so long....David was leaving and his final episodes would begin airing on BBC America. (Prior to that, they were on Syfy-or SciFi as it was called then.) The obsession began in earnest. I was hungry for every piece of news I could find. I haunted You Tube for vids and interviews. I ordered the boxed sets and watched everything again. The final episodes, The End of Time 1 & 2, aired around the holidays. It was like a death in the family. I cried for days. Of course, I couldn't make myself stop watching or searching out DT stuff.

I haven't been able to watch the last Specials again, as of yet. I still can't get through the video diary or the Doctor Who Confidential "allons-y" without sobbing, so I am waiting for awhile. I did join Twitter, and found a whole bunch of fans that feel the same way I do. That has helped immensely, or I'm just deluding myself. In fact, I think some of them are more obsessed than I am--or maybe they are just more vocal about it. I always have in the back of my head, what if HE would drop in and see what people are saying! (Of course, he won't.) But it stops me from saying what I am really thinking, at times. Which is probably not a bad thing at all. :)

David Tennant:Ongoing Obsession

Not sure what it is about this man (other than the obvious, of course) that turned an otherwise normal, married with children, more *ahem* mature woman, into a pathetic fan girl. It has gotten so bad, I have been trying to recruit/persuade my teenage daughter to come to the DT side (she is currently a Johnny Depp fan), by plying her with movies and Doctor Who dvds! How did this happen to me?? *sigh*
